Owl Adventures

We have been really lucky to have an owl expert visit our school. The children were able to find out lots of information about owls and other animals. They were really excited to get to see the creatures close up! What a wonderful experience for our Foundation Stage children!

Roald Dahl Day 2023

This morning in crew we celebrated Roald Dahl Day. We checked in by sharing our favourite Roald Dahl books and characters. Next we played matching pairs with some of our favourite characters like Willy Wonka, the BFG and Mr Twit. We ended our crew session by listening to an extra from Matilda and we loved listening to Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood – it definitely wasn’t the ending we were expecting!!

Time Capsule

We’ve been busy in Crew Goodyer this morning creating our time capsules filled with photographs, pledges and string to show how tall we are at the start of Year 2. It will be fun to see how much we have all grown when we open them up at the end of the year!

Artist of the week

This morning we have been exploring the work of Peter Thorpe, an American artist who creates abstract art and has created lots of artwork about space.

During our gallery walk we shared with our talk partners what we noticed, what we praised and what we wondered about each piece of artwork.
We are looking forward to creating our own pieces of space art using some of Peter Thorpe’s
techniques.

Sponsored Dance-A-Thon

What a morning filled with dancing, singing and fun! We are feeling very proud of ourselves for completing our challenge to make sure someone from Year 2 was filling the dance floor at all times all the way till lunchtime!
Thank you to everyone who supported us in raising funds towards our end of year celebrations!

Walking to school challenge

We have had a really fun week walking to school and completing our daily mile challenge. Well done everybody for your incredible effort. We have earned some lovely stickers, biscuits and juice. Freya has received a special certificate for walking to school every day all the way from Askern. Well done Freya.

Handa’s Surprise 🐘🍍

Over the last two weeks children in EYFS have been exploring the story Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Brown. This links to our current expedition, exploring all the different ways we can travel, as Handa is a little girl who walks a long journey to her friend’s village with a basket of fruit on her head. Little does she know there are some cheeky animals who pinch her fruit along the way!

An exciting activity was using all of our senses to explore a pineapple, mango, avocado, orange and passionfruit that feature in the story. Afterwards we created beautiful work by writing sentences about what we found out.

Then we had great fun taking part in an African drumming workshop. Steve from Unbeatable Energy used percussion instruments to retell an African folktale about an Anansi spider.

He then taught us how to play African drums by tapping along to catching rhymes such as ‘juicy juicy mango!’. The children loved making their own music and dance moves and then performing this to their parents at the end of the day.

A big thank you to the parents who came to watch our performance. We loved that you had an opportunity play the instruments too! It was an experience the children will definitely remember. 🪘🎶

We are historians!

Today we’ve been using online sources to research the life of King Charles III. We were able to find out so much more information to add to the anchor charts we started yesterday and enjoyed the challenge of finding the most interesting new fact to share with the class.

What is the journey of King Charles III?

This week we have been historians researching the time line of King Charles III and exploring his family tree.

We have also been design technologists researching coins in preparation for designing our own coronation commemorative coins.

Finally, we demonstrated our beautiful handwriting in our invitations to our grown ups for Friday’s celebration.
