New Food Friday!

Following our visit from Mrs Wilson, the dietician last week, we have decided to try a new food each Friday. This week some of the children have tried houmous for the very first time. It went down a treat…

I wonder what will be next on our menu?

World Maths Day 2025

We spent time celebrating World Maths Day in our key stage one community meeting this morning. We thought about when we use maths outside of school, why it is important and we even talked about some famous mathematicians!

We finished our community meeting with some maths puzzles. I was very impressed how people were grappling to solve the problems!

We are growing!

In our final case study we have been considering the question ‘how does my body grow and change?’ The children enjoyed looking back at photos from when they were babies and we played a game of baby guess who.

We have been reading ‘The Growing Story’ by Ruth Krauss that celebrates those little changes that tell us we’re growing up! The children have thought of some great ways that we can keep our bodies strong and healthy…

EXERCISE

The children enjoy keeping fit in our P.E sessions each week. We have started doing a daily mile in the morning before our phonic sessions. It makes us feel good walking in the sunshine and we are ready to learn!

DRINK WATER

EAT HEALTHY FOODS

We were lucky to have an expert visitor in school, Mrs Wilson, a dietician from Doncaster Hospital. The children enjoyed listening to her knowledge and insight and they thoroughly enjoyed sorting the foods into the different categories.

We love growing and learning together in Class 1. It has been a great end to an awesome expedition! We are looking forward to celebrating with our families tomorrow at our celebration of learning event šŸ™‚

Year 1 presentation of learning

We have had an amazing afternoon sharing our learning with our parents and presenting our final product. We have tried different fruit and vegetables, learnt lots of facts about plants, tasted beetroot smoothie and a Spinach cake.

Our week in Reception

Our reception children have had a wonderful week exploring our learning environment. They have been designing and making some wonderful models in our construction areas. They have also taken their phonics outdoors and have been amazing us with some of the long words they have been writing! They have been planting their own seeds and observing them as they grow and change into little shoots. Finally, all children have been marvellous mathematicians and have been identifying and explaining ‘doubles’. They have taken part in our whole class lessons and then accessed number areas independently to further develop their understanding. A super week of learning – well done Class 2!

Growing Curious Minds in Science Week…

Class 1 have enjoyed predicting, collaborating and experimenting this week. We started the week by dropping gummy bears into water, vinegar, salt water and sugar water. We were excited to see what happened although we were a little disappointed we couldn’t eat them when the experiment was finished!

Can you guess which liquid grew the biggest bears?

We then had a special invitation from the Year Three children at Norton Junior School. They invited us along to their science fair, where we got to find out some fascinating facts. We would like to say a big thank you to all of the Year Three children, they did an amazing job running the stalls and holding the children’s attention. Thanks so much for having us!

Growing to like science week.

This week Nursery have been Scientists whilst investigating how humans grow and change, driven by our key text ā€œWhen I Was a Babyā€ by Deborah Niland. We have been introduced to our new science characters, who will help us to navigate investigations. We have focused on ā€œPredicting Pipā€, helping the children to understand how to make predictions or reasonable guesses about what may happen before experimenting.

To activate our learning and hook the children into the week we played a game of ā€œGuess the Baby?ā€ Looking at photos of the children as babies and guessing which baby was each child. We then sorted activities or tasks that babies Can or Can’t do, explaining why – thinking about how undeveloped new babies are.

Our first practical experiment this week was ā€œGrowing Gummy Bearsā€. This linked to what humans need to grow. We investigated which of four different liquids; salt water, sugar water, white vinegar or plain water were the best conditions to grow the bear. The children made predictions of what they thought may happen to the bears as we dropped them into the ramekins.

We then observed how the bears changed and grew in the different solutions over 24 hours. The results revealed that the bear in the salt water turned white from absorbing the salt particles and stayed very small, the bear in the vinegar began to melt and fall to pieces (one of the children explained this process as ā€œdissolvedā€), the bear in the sugar water grew bigger but was very sticky and slimy because of all of the sugar in the water. Finally the bear in the regular water grew the most and was perfectly in one piece, showing that clean water was essential to growing.

Our second experiment linked to what we need to help us grow. The children had previously looked at what we needed to grow during our Tranquil Tuesday Crew, using picture prompts to help scaffold their understanding.

Then today Nursery observed how humans need oxygen to breathe, grow and survive. The children made predictions about the experiment from a diagram shown during our Wise Wednesday Crew. They thought about what would happen to the candle if a jar was placed over the top? Some of our answers included; ā€œThe glass will breakā€, ā€œIt will burnā€, ā€œIt will go off fireā€, ā€œIt will make a big lightā€ and ā€œIt will run out of breathā€.

They then observed as I modelled the experiment, fixing a candle into play dough, placing three sets of coins around a bowl and filling the base of the bowl with coloured water. Then I lit the candle and placed a jar over the top of the flame, resting on the coins. The children observed as the oxygen was used up in the jar and the flame was suffocated, causing the water to rise up the glass – taking the place of the oxygen. They watched in awe as the flame went out and listened carefully to the sound of the vacuum made by the water. One of the children likened the experiment to ā€œWhen to go to bed and pull the covers over your head, if you stay like that, you could suffocate because there’s no air.ā€

We have had lots of fun and excitement in Nursery this week experimenting and are looking forward to the rest of the week. Great learning Nursery!
