Class Five Cafe
This morning we have been learning about the eat well plate and thinking about all the different components of a balanced diet. We had lots of meals to label and evaluate how much of a balanced meal it was and what elements of the meal were missing.

Compassionate Crew
I have been blown away by the thoughtful and compassionate discussions that happened in Crew Parsons this morning. Today marks one year since the start of the war in Ukraine. We watched the video below and discussed how the children will have been feeling and how lucky we are to live in such a diverse world. We also thought about all the different ways we could help people feel safe and loved in such a scary situation.
We followed that with a minutes reflection.

World Book Day
We are going to be celebrating World Book Day in school (NIS and NJS) on Friday 3rd March 2023. Activities will be happening throughout the day in classes.
If children would like to dress up on this day – they are very welcome to do so. However, we would like to stress there is no obligation for anyone to go out and spend money on costumes. If children choose not to dress up they are welcome to come in their own clothes or pyjamas ready for a ‘bedtime’ story!
We are looking forward to celebrating all things book related together.

Celebrating Pancake Day 🥞
Today we celebrated Shrove Tuesday and the start of Lent in the best way possible… tasting pancakes!
Children in EYFS were able to choose a topping to spread on their pancake. It’s no surprise that the most popular option was chocolate spread. 😋 The children were challenged to use their fine motor skills to control the knife and spread their topping independently.
Today we have also enjoyed listening to the story Mr Wolf’s Pancakes by Jan Fearnley and reading more information about why we celebrate Shrove Tuesday by eating pancakes. We discussed how tomorrow is the start of Lent and the beginning of the countdown to Easter Sunday. ✝️🐣 We are going to continue learning more about Easter and why it is a special Christian celebration later in the term.
Red Nose Day 2023
To celebrate Comic Relief this year, we are inviting you to come to school on Friday 17th March dressed in red with a suggested donation of £1 (to be paid on ParentPay).
As part of Red Nose Day we are launching our very own Design a T-shirt Competition! If you want to take part, all you need to do is design your very own Red Nose Day t-shirt and bring it with you on Friday 17th March.
Get creative and design it in any way you want!
You might want to draw a picture, paint it or even create a t-shirt you can wear on the day. Each crew will vote for their winning design to be entered into a whole school competition.

How can we represent the number 10?
In maths today our warm up challenge was to represent the number 10 in lots of different ways. I was so impressed with how the children used their existing knowledge and understanding of number to create their representations. We used number fans, numicon, ten frames, multilink and paper. We also sorted visual representations into two groups, those that were 10 and those that were not. Great work Class 2!
In the moment learning and play.
One of the children from morning Nursery found a dead spider today in the playroom. They brought it to me and asked me to look how beautiful it was. We spent a little while admiring the spider and its markings along with its long legs. I questioned the child what do you think happened to the spider? ”I don’t know, maybe he got poorly and died?” they replied. The child then shared their own experiences of death linked to a family pet when they were a baby. I invited the other children to come and see the spider and they sat patiently as the child carefully put the spider into a little cup for them to see. He then passed it around his peers.
Children’s Mental Health week.
In Nursery this week we have been thinking about how to help keep our brains healthy and how to show kindness. We have taken part in various crews on sharing, kindness, exercise and our feeling monsters (zones of regulation). The children brought in their own teddies to share with their friends in a circle game. Every other child had a teddy and they sang a song called ”Pass the Teddy”. The aim of the game was to bounce the bear on their knee and then when the music stopped they had to pass the bear to the child next to them without a bear/toy so that they could have a turn too. All of the children were very gracious and kind to share their bears and they were very understanding that not everyone was holding a bear without feeling left out or possessive over their teddy.
Today the children thought more about the range of emotions they may feel via the feeling monsters (zones of regulation). We made stick puppets of the monsters. Nursery recognised that each emotion needed different facial expressions, such as a smile, frown, scowl or excited face. The children used amazing cutting skills to create the faces of the emotion they wanted to explore. They used googly and sticky eyes and drew on the appropriate mouth/ expression. We were were very proud peacocks of our final results!
